Products brand Macanudo

Macanudo – a resounding name in the world of cigars. Behind this brand lies nothing less than a world-class torcedor, who has won the hearts of aficionados with his long and carefully aged cigars.

Part of an Empire

Macanudo cigars are among the finest that the Dominican Republic has to offer. As part of the world's second-largest tobacco manufacturer, General Cigar Company, the brand quickly ascended to the top end of the premium league. And rightly so – Macanudo stands for perfect cigar craftsmanship. This is evident in the enormous range alone. Ten different Macanudo cigars with precisely matched tobacco variations in wrapper, binder, and filler testify to the proud portfolio of the premium manufacturer.

Tobacco Pioneers

1848 marked the first chapter of the success story of General Cigar Company: In this year, the German trader Ferdinand Kullmann emigrated to America and discovered his love for tobacco. As a wine merchant, the world of enjoyment was not unfamiliar to him, and thus the company evolved into a full-fledged family business over the next hundred years. The focus on tobacco products was continually sharpened. The result was increasingly meticulous cultivation and processing techniques. The founder's grandson, Joseph Cullman Jr., with his pioneering spirit, cultivated Connecticut Shade tobacco in America from genuine Cuban seed – a milestone for Macanudo's cigars.

1968 – A New Era for the Brand

In 1968, the General Cigar Company purchased a Jamaican cigar label named Macanudo. From then on, the rise of the previously insider-only brand to the best-selling premium cigar on the American market began. This success is owed to Ramón Cifuentes and his protégé Daniel Núñez. Today, as in the past, Macanudo cigars are among the best that the General Cigar Company has to offer.

Tobacco Variation for the Perfect Taste

The handmade long fillers are all and without exception manufactured in the Dominican Republic. However, the origin of the tobacco is scattered across the globe. For good reason, as each growing area has its own taste specifics. Which tobacco Macanudo uses for which blend is well-considered and the result of years of experience. The tobaccos used come from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and the United States, as well as Brazil, Ecuador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Macanudo's focus is always on creating cigars that captivate and make a smoke an exceptional experience.

Confusing Variety

As mentioned earlier, the brand has an extremely broad range. For aficionados not yet familiar with the label, it may initially seem confusing that so many series have almost the same name and a color in the name. Let's shed some light on the matter!

The mild Connecticut, formerly known as Café, is characterized by being a light and uncomplicated smoke. This trait has likely made it a true bestseller. The Maduro, on the other hand, is more full-bodied, has a sweet-aromatic character, yet always remains balanced.

When the Inspirado launched in 2014, it was exclusively intended for the European market. There, the cigar with the oily-aromatic wrapper from Honduras became so successful that it is now also available in the United States.

A year later, the very complex Inspirado Black followed, named after the dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper from the USA. It received a relaunch in 2018 and has since had even better burn characteristics.

The mildest family member is the Inspirado White, which combines low strength with complex aromatics. In stark contrast is its sister, the Inspirado Red, which, with its Ligero wrapper, is the strongest of the bunch. Its binder comes from Nicaragua, where the filler, supplemented by a Honduran component, also originates.

The latest series is the Inspirado Green from 2020. It can be described as woody to earthy, with sweet notes giving it a pleasant character.

For its 50th anniversary in 2018, the brand gave itself a gift in the form of an M by Dark Corona – yes, you read that correctly! – vitola. The Corona was refined with "gourmet coffee," giving it a coffee flavor without making the smoke unpleasantly sweet. Unconventional, but successful!
